Dance/Play: An Artistic Convergence
of Sound and Movement

On September 25, at 5:00 in the afternoon, dancers from BalletRox and musicians from Conservatory Lab's Dudamel orchestra will perform on the stage of the Strand theatre, in a collaborative concert of music and movement.

The concert will feature highlights from the repertoire of both groups individually, in addition to combined numbers.

The collaboration began during Conservatory Lab's 2011 Summer Enrichment Program, during which the two groups held several rehearsals together. Students explored the connections between movement and music, from the locomotion of their bow arms to the flow of air through their lungs. This opportunity was made possible through a grant from the Hunt Alternatives Fund. Don't forget to mark your calendar for this exciting event!.

Tickets: $10, adults; $5, students/senior citizens; and $15 for a family.

OUR MISSION

The mission of BalletRox is to use the power of dance to break down racial barriers and enrich the community's artistic experience through the creation of a diverse dance company and school.

Real Training
BalletRox offers scholarships for under served children, regardless of financial ability or career goals. All children at BalletRox receive a solid foundation in ballet, as well as an opportunity to explore other dance styles, such as modern, jazz, tap, and more.

Real Opportunities
BalletRox students and professional dancers have the opportunity to perform in critically acclaimed productions, like Anthony Williams’ Urban Nutcracker and other innovative dances. BalletRox continues to establish its unique position as a multi-racial dance company and school. This is where dance gets real.

Real Benefits
All ballet schools teach dance technique, but because BalletRox focuses on at-risk, urban children, it is able to teach much more. BalletRox is uniquely positioned to provide the proven psychological and developmental benefits of dance. Through dance classes and performance opportunities students learn discipline, teamwork, self-respect, and self-esteem. BalletRox provides critical tools for helping young people manage peer pressures, family crisis, and threats from the streets as well as for success in the adult world.

Review: Urban Nutcracker 2010
The Phoenix, Marcia B. Siegal
December 14, 2010

"Community is the name of this Nutcracker's game, and you get used to amiable clashes of tone. In an extended street-scene prologue, kids explode into hip-hop, Bollywood eclecticism, and a chorus-line shimmy. At the Christmas party, the guests perform their diverse styles of dancing: balletic swoops and extensions, jitterbugging, breakdance and moonwalking, a robotic doll duet."
